Box Score DAVIE – In their final meeting of 2004, the Barry University baseball team fell to the Knights of Nova Southeastern 9-5 earlier tonight at the NSU Baseball Complex.
It was a defensive battle early on as neither team was able to put any runs on the board until the top of the fourth when the Bucs (31-21) struck first.
Fausto Faraldo got things started leading of the inning with a single up the middle and
Ricky Sanchez followed with a sharply hit single to the shortstop that deflected into centerfield allowing Faraldo to advance to third. He later came around to score the first run of the game on a wild pitch by Knights starter Leo.
However, the lead did not last as the Bucs returned the favor in the bottom half of the inning when starter
Robert Penna threw a wild pitch with runners on second and third allowing the Knights (26-24) to knot the game a 1-1.
The Bucs then exploded for four runs in the top off the fifth. After a sacrifice fly by
Keith Barton that scored
Jesse Naber from third,
Ricky Sanchez stepped to the plate with two on and two out and blasted a monstrous homerun half way up the palm trees beyond the centerfield fence to put the Bucs out in front 5-1. The homerun was number six on the season for Sanchez.
Then in the bottom half of the fifth the Knights rallied for two more runs thanks to some shaky Buccaneer defense to cut the deficit to 5-3 and eventually tied the game in the eighth on a two-run double down the leftfield line by Geron Sands off reliever
Michael Davila. The Knights then took a 6-5 lead one batter later on an RBI single by Chris Reynolds and later added three more insurance runs.
Nova's Mike Malamud (3-4) picked up the win on the mound, while Davila (5-1) suffered the loss.
Sanchez, Naber and Faraldo each had two hits for the Bucs.
The Bucs next take the field when they host Eckerd in a three-game set this coming weekend. Game one is scheduled for Friday night at 6:00 pm with an afternoon doubleheader scheduled to begin Saturday at noon.
