Box Score 2 MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry University softball team (29-17, 8-10 SSC) split a Sunshine State Conference series with the Florida Tech Panthers (29-18-1, 7-14 SSC) earlier today at Buccaneer Field. The Buccaneers wrapped up the three-game series with a 5-4 win in game one, but fell in the nightcap 8-3.
In the front end of the doubleheader, Florida Tech's Jesse Lawrence put the Panthers on the board first with an RBI single in the first inning. Barry's Krista Latessa responded in the second with a two-run home run, her third of the season, to give the Bucs a 2-1 lead. The Panthers tied the game in the third and Kristen Fettes gave Florida Tech a 3-2 lead after four.
The Panthers lead was short lived when Amanda Moore belted her ninth home run of the year that scored three runs giving Barry a 5-3 lead in the fifth. The Panthers rallied in the sixth scoring a single run, but the Bucs fended off the late surge for the win.
Elizabeth Bennett (24-12) picked up the win for Barry giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits, while striking out nine. Kristen Lane (12-7) suffered the loss for the Panthers giving up five runs and struck six.
In the nightcap, the tides turned as the Panthers took an early 1-0 lead in the third on Monica Gordy's RBI single to left. Barry's
Maile Keeney led off the fourth with a single and later scored on Moore's second home run on the day and 10th of the year to give the Bucs the 2-1 lead. Delilah Stroup later scored on a wild pitch to extend Barry's lead 3-1 heading into the fifth. Finally in the sixth, the Panthers erupted with seven runs on four hits which included Gordy's grand slam.
Bennett (24-13) gave up eight runs and struck out four in the loss for Barry, while Christine Custer (9-5) gave up three runs and struck out four in the win for Florida Tech.
Latessa went 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBI, while Moored added two homers and five RBI to lead Barry. Fettes and Jesse Lawrence each added three hits and an RBI, while Gordy finished 2 for 6 with a home run and five RBI.
The Buccaneers return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 28 hosting St. Thomas at Buccaneer Field for senior day at 5 pm.
