Box Score FT. MYERS, Fla.—The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles completed a three-game sweep of the Barry Buccaneers 5-4 at the FGC Baseball Complex on Sunday.
The Eagles (37-15) struck first in the third inning. Patrick Stubbe walked with one out and Chris Brown followed with a hit-and-run single to put runners on the corners. Rene Ruiz squeezed in Stubbe and Jason Cooper followed with a base hit to score Brown.
Mike Howard led off the fourth inning with a double and scored on a single by Chris Perry to increase the lead to 3-0.
The Buccaneers (27-19) trimmed the lead to 3-1 on the fifth inning, without the benefit of a hit.
Cesar Aranguren led off with a walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly by
Carlos de la Osa.
The Eagles got the run back in the seventh inning. Stubbe led off with a single and scored on a mammoth fly ball by Adam Masino.
The run proved crucial as Barry scored three runs in the ninth to tie the game at 4-4 on Aranguren's two-run homer and a bases-loaded ground out by
Alex Meneses.
Brown scored the winnig run in the bottom of the ninth on a wild pitch by
Jon Adams (0-3). Adams took the loss for Barry, giving up the one run on three hits and two walks in 2.1 innings in relief of starter
Greg Dicso. Chris Cahill (2-0) got the win for the Eagles after blowing the save in the ninth.
The ninth inning spoiled an excellent performance by Eagle starter Jason Short. He worked seven innings, giving up one unearned run on seven hits and one walk, striking out two.
The Bucs return to Feinbloom Field on Tuesday, Apr. 20 for a makeup game against Lynn at 6:00 pm, then face Florida Tech in a non-conference game on Wednesday, Apr. 21 also at 6:00 pm.
