Box Score 2 BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Barry University baseball team (26-16, 8-10 SSC) split a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader with the Lynn Fighting Knights (19-23, 5-10) earlier today at the McCusker Sports Complex to wrap up a three-game conference series. The Buccaneers won the first game 12-6 and fell in the nightcap 12-10.
The Bucs opened the front end of the doubleheader with a 12-6 win ignited by
Nick Corbeil's RBI double in the second. With the game tied at one apiece and two outs,
Alex Meneses belted his first career home run to left center giving Barry a 3-1 lead. The Knights narrowed the gap to one when Beau McMilliam drove in John Zagaria with an RBI single.
However, the hopes of a Knight comeback lasted only a short while as the Bucs errupted with a four-run third inning started by
Fausto Faraldo's solo home run, while
Brian Lima drove in two runs with an RBI single. The Knights managed to score four more runs, but the Bucs tacked on three runs in the final two innings for the win.
Freshman pitcher
Michael Davila (4-0) picked up the win for Barry in relief hurling 3.2 innings giving up two runs and striking out three. Joel Burnett (5-2) suffered the loss for Lynn giving up seven runs on six hits and walking three.
After taking an early 1-0 lead on Faraldo's sacrifice fly in the first, the Knights offense errupted in the bottom half of the inning with nine runs. Ignited by Francisco Dinzey's RBI single, the Knights victimized Barry starter
Alex Gonzalez for four hits and eight runs.
The Buccaneers tried to mount a late comeback scoring four runs in the fifth and five in the sixth, but Knight reliever Raymond Leyva slammed the door in the final 1.1 innings allowing Barry one hit, while striking out two to pick up his second save of the season.
Gonzalez (5-5) pitched only two-thirds of an inning giving up eight runs, four hits and walked three in the loss for Barry. Aaron Miller (3-3) picked up the win for Lynn in one inning of relief allowing five runs (three earned) on three hits and struck out three.
Sanchez went 6 for 10 at the plate with a double, a home run and three RBI to lead the Bucs, while
Jerry Thornton when 5 for 8. Lima added three RBI, while Faraldo and Meneses each added a home run and two RBI. Dinzey went 6 for 10 with six RBI and a home run to lead the Knights.
The Buccaneers will return to action on Tuesday, Apr. 12 in Ft. Lauderdale taking on Nova Southeastern at 7 pm.
