Box Score 2 TAMPA, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers and the Tampa Spartans split a Sunshine State Conference baseball doubleheader today, with the Bucs taking game one 7-3 and the Spartans rallying for the nightcap 3-1.
In game one, Barry (21-11, 5-6 SSC) jumped out in front early, but a five-run fifth inning carried the Bucs to the win.
Keith Barton got the Bucs out in front with singles runs in the second and third innings. In the second, he scored after a walk and a stolen base, then in the third he dove in
Brian Lima with a single.
Barry exploded for five runs in the fifth. With two outs, Barton singled and stole second.
Ricky Sanchez walked and Tampa starter Eric Beattie (4-4) hit Fausto Farlado to load the bases. Nick Corbiel and
Jerry Thornton each drew bases-loaded walks to drive in runs and Faraldo scored on a passed ball.
Danny Aguiar capped the inning with a two-run single.
That would be all the offense
Jayson Brown (5-1) would need. He cruised through the complete game, allowing three runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out eight. Beattie took the loss for the Spartans, giving up seven runs on seven hits and four walks with four strike outs.
In game two, the Spartans (24-10,6-5 SSC) scored three runs in the first inning off
Alex Gonzalez (4-4) on a RBI-single by Tim Duff and a two-run homer by Ryan Stuart.
Casey McKenzie (8-1) made the runs stand up, allowing only one unearned run on five hits, with five strike outs, in 5.1 innings. Gonzalez tossed a complete game in the loss, allowing just the three first inning runs. He gave up six hits and walked two, striking out four. Justin Boza picked up his 11th save, tossing the last 1.2 innings with allowing a hit. He walked one and struck out two.
The teams will conclude the series on Sunday with a single game at 1:00 pm.
