Box Score HOMESTEAD – The Barry University baseball team defeated Division I LaSalle University 8-3 earlier today at the Homestead Sports Complex.
Barry fell behind early on allowing the Explorers to plate a run in the bottom half of the first, however, the Bucs quickly responded scoring three in their half of the third.
Jerry Thornton led off the inning beating out an infield single and later came around to score the Bucs first run of the game on an RBI double to left-center by
Brian Lima. Lima then came around to score on a RBI triple to the right-center gap by
Cesar Aranguren and
Ricky Sanchez capped of the inning with an RBI double to right scoring Aranguren and putting the Bucs up 3-1.
The Bucs then added another run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Lima, before piling on three more in the fifth on an three-run blast over the right-field wall by
Carlos de la Osa extending the Bucs lead to 7-1.
LaSalle later added single runs in the sixth and eighth innings, but it was not enough as that is all the Bucs pitching staff would allow.
The Bucs used five different pitchers on the day with
Gerry Guarch earning the win tossing three innings of relief, while allowing just four hits and one earned run.
Jesse Naber was also solid in relief. Naber entered the game in the eighth inning with the bases loaded and nobody and got the Bucs out of the jam getting the first batter he faced to ground out and then struck out the next two batters both looking.
Thornton, de la Osa, Sanchez and
Keith Barton each had two hits for the Bucs, while de la Osa and
Brian Lima were the top RBI men. de la Osa drove in three on the day and Lima drove in two.
The Bucs return to action tomorrow night when they host Dominican College at 6:00 pm.
