Box Score MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry University baseball team's nine-game win streak was haulted by the Lewis Flyers 12-10 earlier tonight in the first of a three-game series at Feinbloom Field.
The Buccaneers (10-3) took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning on a Fausto Farald two-run homer to right field. With the bases loaded and two outs in the next inning, the Flyers' Matt Newquist hit a blooper down the right field line notching two runs to tie the score at 2-2.
The Bucs captured the lead again in the bottom half of the third on a
Brian Lima RBI double, though the the lead was short lived. The Flyers added two runs in the fifth to regain the lead, but a relentless Buccaneer team tied the game 4-4 in the bottom of the inning on a
Cesar Aranguren RBI fielder's choice.
Feinbloom Field became a lauching pad in the top of the sixth when Lewis' Victor Naut led off the inning with a solo home run. Three errors later, Naut launch a grand slam in the same inning that gave the Flyers a 12-4 lead. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Barry's
Nick Corbeil ignited a six-run inning with a three-run homer to right center, but the Bucs came up on the short end, 12-10.
Aranguren tallied four RBI to lead the Bucs offensively, while Corbiel added three.
Jesse Naber,
Jerry Thornton and
Alex Meneses each had three hits for the Bucs.
Chris Casale (1-2) suffered the loss for Barry giving up eight runs (four earned) on just seven hits, while striking out five.
Lewis' Matt Petrusek (1-0) picked up a season-opening win striking out six and giving up four runs in seven innings. Dave Tolchin hurled the final 1.1 innings to pick up the save. Naut led the Flyers at the plate going two for five with two homers and five RBI.
Both teams are set to face off at 6 pm on Friday, Feb. 27 for game two of the series.
