Box Score 2 MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry University softball team fell to the Saint Leo Lions in a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader 7-1 and 3-1 earlier today at Buccaneer Field.
In the first game,
Maile Keeney put the Buccaneers (7-4, 1-2 SSC) on the scoreboard first with an RBI double scoring Kim Fujimoto from second. With Barry leading 1-0, Saint Leo's Hayley Mallory answered in the second with an RBI single to tie the game at one apiece.
With runners at first and second, Saint Leo's Erin Brunt hit a three-run homer to put the Lions up 4-1 in the top of the third. The Lions added another run in the sixth and two in the seventh for the 7-1 win over the highly touted Buccaneers. Barry's sluggers struggled at the plate managing one run on three hits.
Elizabeth Bennett (7-2) suffered the loss for the Buccaneers giving up seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits and struck out one. Heather Gamlin (3-1) allowed one unearned and three hits, while striking out seven to earn the win for the Lions.
In the nightcap, Saint Leo's Gina McKeon got the Lions off to an early 1-0 lead in the first with an RBI single. Denyve Duncan added two more runs for the Lions in the fourth with a two-RBI triple extending Saint Leo's lead to three. Barry's Kim Fujimoto tried to rally the Buccaneer troops in the sixth with an RBI single, but Gamlin made her second appearance in relief to hold off the Buccaneer threat allowing one hit in the final 1.2 innings and picked up the save.
Despite her best performance of the season, Sarah Backe (0-2) suffered the loss for Barry giving up three runs on four hits and struck out five. Katie Heintz (2-2) earned the win giving up one run on five hits and struck out two.
Making her way into the starting lineup for the first time this season, Ashley Loose led the Buccaneer sluggers going 3 for 7 at the plate with a run scored, while Keeney finished 2 for 6 with an RBI. Denyve Duncan went 4 for 7 with two runs scored and two RBI to lead Saint Leo, while Brunt finished 3 for 7 with two runs scored and four RBI.
The Buccaneers will resume play on Sunday, Feb. 15 hosting North Florida at 12 noon at Buccaneer Field.
