Softball Slips Past Lions Late

Box Score MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry University softball team (7-2, 1-0 SSC) battled out 10 hard innings with the Saint Leo Lions (3-3, 0-1 SSC) to come away with a late 2-1 Sunshine State Conference win earlier today at Buccaneer Field.

Barry's Elizabeth Bennett and Saint Leo's Katie Heintz battled from the mound holding the opposition scoreless at the end of seven. Following the international tie breaker in the 10th inning, Saint Leo's Hayley Mallory was placed on second and later scored on Denyve Duncan's RBI single to left giving the Lions a 1-0 lead.

Following the same tie breaker procedure in the bottom half of the 10th, Heather Hodges was placed on second and scored on a Maile Keeney RBI single to tie the game at one apiece. Kat McNamara pinch ran for Keeney and after an Amber Rodda single and Heintz's wild pitch, ended up at third with one out and Amanda Moore coming to the plate. Moore blasted a line drive past Lion shortstop Ali Flynn to drive in the winning run as Barry came from behind for the 2-1 victory.

Barry sluggers pounded out 12 hits in the 10-inning affair, while Hodges, Rodda, Moore, Krista Latessa and Erin Sutton each had two hits to lead the team. Bennett (7-1) earned the win allowing just five hits, one unearned run and striking out a career-high 10 batters. Heintz (1-2) took the loss for the Lions giving up all 12 Barry hits allowing two runs (one earned) and striking out eight.

Both teams will resume play on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 1 pm for the final game a the three game conference series.
