Box Score TAMPA, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers fell 71-59 to the Tampa Spartans in Sunshine State Conference men's basketball action on Saturday at the Martinez Center.

The Bucs trailed by four, 37-33 at the half. But Tampa (8-4, 1-0 SSC) opened the second period with a 11-4 run to go up 48-37 on a pair of free throws by Jason Amos at 14:49.

Barry (6-5, 0-1 SSC) trimmed the lead back to four, 56-52 with 5:33 left to play on free throws by Clifford Smith.

But the Spartans had one more run in them, scoring the next 10 points to lead 66-52 with 3:17 left to play and held on down the stretch with free throws and clutch shooting.

Barry was led by Smith with 13 points, while Nick Ellingsworth-Perez added 12. Achille Ngounou led four Spartans in double figures with 12. James Mereus, Mark Borders and Amos each has 11.

The Bucs return home on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 7:30 to host the Lynn Fighting Knights.
