Box Score MIAMI SHORES – The Barry University men's basketball team earned its first SSC victory of the season this afternoon knocking off Saint Leo 53-43 at the Health & Sports Center.
After allowing Saint Leo the first basket of the game, the Bucs (8-8, 1-3 SSC) went on 17-4 run to gain an early 17-6 lead with 7:26 to play in the first half. However, Saint Leo responded shortly thereafter going on 8-2 run of their own to bring themselves to within five at 19-14 with 4:13 to go before the break. The Bucs then managed to extend their lead to 10 at 26-16, but once again the resilient Saint Leo offense came storming back closing out the half with a 7-0 run and found themselves down by just three at 26-23 heading into the locker rooms.
Heading into the second half, Saint Leo clearly had the momentum in their favor as they scored 7 more unanswered points to take a 30-26 lead with 17:26 to play as the Bucs were unable to get any offense going. The Bucs then trailed for the next nine minutes until a two-point basket by Luka Jaukovic put them back out in front 36-35 at the 9:50 mark and Clifford Smiths jumper with 6:27 to play capped off a 9-0 run for the Bucs giving them a 41-35 lead. The Bucs then added a couple more baskets before shooting 8-9 from the charity stripe to close out the game and earn the 53-43 victory.
Nick Ellingsworth-Perez was the Bucs top scorer pouring in 21 points, while pulling down a team high 9 rebounds. George Eshesimua led Saint Leo with 10 points.
The Bucs return to action on Tuesday when they visit Florida Tech at 7:30 pm.
