Softball Trounces Spartans

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry University softball took a pair of Sunshine State Conference games from the Tampa Spartans earlier today winning the first game 6-0 and the nightcap 5-1.

In the first game, KD Smith reached on a Spartan error in the first that proved costly to the inexperienced Tampa squad. Two batters later, Sarah White drove Smith in with an RBI single to give the Bucs an early 1-0 lead heading into the second. The Bucs added single runs in the next two innings, two in the fourth, and one in the fifth for the 6-0 victory.

Led by White's three hits and two RBI, the Buccaneers pounded out nine hits to the Spartans' five.

Geralyn Elam (23-3) gave up five hits, struck out 11, and walked one to pick up the win for the Bucs. Becky Testin (4-3) hurled 3.1 innings, gave up seven hits, five runs (three earned), and walked four in the loss.

In the nightcap, errors proved fatal again as the Bucs took advantage of four Spartan errors. With two outs in the first, White reached on poor Tampa fielding and later scored on Kim Fujimoto's sixth home run of the season to give the Bucs an early 2-0 lead. Freshman Amanda Moore extended the Bucs' lead to three driving in Kristina Socarras with an RBI double in the first. The Bucs added single runs in the second and fourth for the 5-1 win.

Heather Hodges went three-for-four with a double and an RBI to lead the Buccaneer charge in game two. Smith followed going two-for-four, while Fujimoto added a team-high two RBI.

Erin Cormier (15-2) gave up one run six hits, walked one and struck out seven to earn the win for the Bucs. Melissa Holmes (8-11) took the loss for the Spartans giving up five runs (one earned) in six innings of work.

The Buccaneers improved to 38-7 overall and 15-1 in the SSC, while the Spartans fell to 18-17, 6-10 in the SSC. The Buccaneers return to action on Sunday, Apr. 6 hosting Eckerd College at Buccaneer Field at 1 pm.
