Box Score KEY BISCAYNE, Fla.—The Lynn Lady Knights defeated the Barry Buccaneers 5-4 to win the 2003 Sunshine State Conference Women's Tennis championship at the Crandon Park Tennis Center Monday night.
The Knights took a 2-1 advantage after doubles, winning at the top two flights. Lynn's top team of Kristina Triska and Marie Barbier, ranked 5th in the ITA rankings, defeated Barry's 8th-ranked team of Conny Grunes and Gizella Turbok 8-4. Barry came back to win at number three with Greta Trotman and Valeria Papandrea defeating Masa Bajramovic and Monse Palacios 8-5. The Knights caught the match's first break when Monica Mastalirova and Bucke Yavuz came back from a 6-4 deficit to beat Barry's Victoria Courmes and Maria Lopez 8-6.
In singles, the Buccaneers stormed back. Turbok handled Barbier 6-1, 6-4 at number three and Trotman made equally short schrift of Bajramovic 6-3, 6-1 at number four.
After Courmes knocked off Lynn's Triska 6-2, 6-2 at the top of the order, the Bucs led 4-2. But Palacios rallied in a third set to defeat Lopez and Yavuz also prevailed over Papandrea in three sets to tie it back up.
The match came down to another three-set gem between Barry's Grunes and Lynn's Mastalirova at number two. Both players came into the match with prefect records in the spring. They split the first two sets by identical scores of 6-4, with Grunes winning the first and Mastalirova taking the second. In the third set tied 4-4, Mastalirova came up with a big break and then served out the match 6-4.
The Bucs (23-3) and the Knights (19-0) both play host to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regionals this weekend.
