Buccaneers Advance to Women's Tennis Semifinals

Box Score KEY BISCAYNE, Fla.—The higher seeds prevailed in the first round of the Sunshine State Conference Women's Tennis Tournament, but not without some drama, Sunday at the Crandon Park Tennis Center.

In the day's earliest match, the Barry Buccaneers (22-2) rolled over the Saint Leo Lions 5-0 in nearly perfect fashion. At number one doubles, Barry's Gizella Turbok and Conny Grunes defeated the Lions' Krysia Scherlinger and Caryn Hague 8-1. The game was only one the Lions (0-18) managed in the match. Barry won the bottom two doubles flights 8-0.

In singles play, Maria Lopez defeated Anna Peterson 6-0, 6-0 at number four and Valeria Papandrea beat Jen Eigner by the same score.

The Bucs advanced to the semifinals to face Rollins (16-5) after the Tars defeated Eckerd 8-0. The Tars swpet the doubles, including an 8-2 win at the top flight by Vanessa Caddick and Carla Prieto over Eckerd's (8-12) Kristin Lofgren and Magda Correa.

In singles, the Tars took five of six matches with the second flight unfinished. Caddick knocked off Rachel Sanchez 6-0, 6-1 at number one and Frances Giron rolled over Kate Heilman 6-0, 6-0 at number five.

In the third match, the Tampa Spartans came back from a 2-1 doubles deficit to beat Florida Southern 5-2. The Mocs (5-12) jumped out to an early lead with Alexandra Costa-Corrall and Megan Fincham beating Tampa's Liz Moulthrop and Jamie Fox 8-3 at the top doubles and Elizabeth McDonald and Kelly Cox turning in an 8-5 win over Abby Shelide and Heather Eli at number two.

But the Spartans (9-12) rebounded to win 8-3 at number three behind Jenny LaRue and Marissa Singer.

In singles, the Spartans won at the bottom four flights to take the match. Singer bumped off Cox 6-0, 6-1 at number three and Brittany Johnson beat Elizabeth Mendenhall 6-0, 6-3 at number six. After LaRue defeated Jessica Nicolai 6-1, 6-2 at number five, Eli closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-0 win over McDonald at number four.

The Spartans will face number one seed Lynn in the other semifinal.
