Softball Splits With Knights

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry University softball team split a conference doubleheader for the second time this season with the Lynn Fighting Knights winning the first game 4-2, then fell in the nightcap 4-1.

In the first game, KD Smith gave the Bucs a 1-0 lead in the first scoring on an off-target throw by Lynn second baseman Brandi Webb. The Knights tied the game at one apiece in the third on two Buccaneer errors, but with the bases loaded and two out in the fifth, Heather Hodges drove in two to give the Bucs a 3-1 lead. Jenna Piotrowski blasted her 11th homer for the lead to pull the Knights within one, but Buccaneer freshman Amandan Moore countered with a solo shot to left giving the Bucs the 4-2 victory.

The Bucs pieced together their four runs on just four hits, with the Knight scoring two runs on two hits. Heather Hodges was one-for-two with two RBI, while Moore added the homer for the Bucs. Jenna Piotrowski was the Knights leader at the plate with the solo home run.

Geralyn Elam (27-4) gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits and fanned 10 to earn the win. Erika Youngblood (8-9) suffered the loss for the Knights giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits, struck out six and walked three.

In the finale, Buccaneer starter Erin Cormier (18-4) walked six in 1.2 innings of work and gave up four runs in the second inning as the Knights cruised by the top-ranked Buccaneer squad 4-1.

The Buccaneers could only muster one run off Smith's RBI single in the fifth, but the damaged had already been done. Piotrowski led the Knights with a hit and two RBI in the nightcap as the Knights downed the Bucs for the second time this season.

Erin McNerny (13-5) picked up the win for the Knights giving up the one run on four hits, while striking out two and walking three.

With the split, the Buccaneers fall to 45-8 overall and 22-2 in the Sunshine State Conference. Their 22nd win tonight set a new school record for SSC wins. The Knights improved to 32-21 (17-9) in the SSC. The Buccaneers return to action on Friday, Apr. 18 in Melbourne, Fla. taking Florida Tech at 2:30 pm.
