Softball Trounces Lions

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. LEO, Fla. -- The Barry University softball team trounced the Saint Leo Lions earlier today in Sunshine State Conference action winning the first game 9-4 and the nightcap 11-1 in five innings.

Just like clockwork, KD Smith scored the leadoff run in the first giving the Bucs a 1-0 lead. After three scoreless innings, the Bucs accepted seven free passes from Saint Leo hurlers Heather Gamlin and Katie Heintz and scored eight runs in the fifth taking a convincing 9-1 lead. The Bucs held on for a 9-4 victory.

Geralyn Elam (26-4) gave up four runs struck out six and walked one to earn the win for the Buccaneers. Saint Leo's Gamlin (7-15) gave up all nine runs on five hits walked five and struck out one in the loss.

The Bucs shortened the doubleheader to five innings whipping the Lions 11-1 in the nightcap. Taking advantage of six Saint Leo errors, the Bucs scored one in the first and third innings, five in the second and four in the fifth for the win by NCAA mercy rule.

Erin Cormier (18-3) hurled the five innings, gave up one run and fanned eight keeping her 11-0 conference record untarnished. Heintz suffered the loss in 1.2 innings of work, gave up six runs (one earned) and walked five.

For the day, Smith led the Bucs at the plate going three-for-seven with four runs scored and an RBI. Sarah White and Kristina Socarras added three RBI apiece, while White and Heather Hodges each scored three times each.

The Buccaneers improve to 44-7 overall and 21-1 in the Sunshine State Conference matching last seasons win overall and conference win totals with eight games remaining on the schedule. The Lions fell to 19-30, 6-16 in the SSC. The Buccaneers will return to action on Wednesday, Apr 16 hosting Lynn at Buccaneer Field at 6 pm.
