Box Score 2 VALDOSTA, Ga.—The Barry baseball team split a double header with the Valdosta State Blazers, winning game one 4-1 and dropping the nightcap 13-6 at Valdosta's Billy Grant Field on Saturday.
In game one, Jon Sandola (2-2) evened his record with a complete game. He allowed only five hits and one unearned run, striking out four without a walk. He used the capacious confines of Billy Grant Field to his advantage, as 15 of his 21 outs came in the air.
Cesar Aranguren was the offensive star for the Bucs, singling in two runs in the first inning. He also laid down the sacrifice in the sixth inning which brought in the other two runs when Blazer pitcher Adam Lingenfelter (3-2) threw the ball away. Lingenfelter also threw a complete game, allowing five hits, but walked four and threw a wild pitch in addition to making the costly error.
The Blazers broke out the bats in the second game, rapping out 16 hits and scoring 13 runs. Barry starter
Robert Penna (2-1) allowed six hits and two walks in 2.1 innings, leading to six runs (five earned). But Blazer starter Jacques Wattecamps had problems of his own and failed to get out of the fourth inning, despite leading 8-3. Render Parkman (2-0) came in and tossed 3.1 innings to pick up the win in relief. He allowed five hits and three runs, while striking out four.
Scott Fletcher went four-for-four for the Blazers, driving in three runs. David Lewis also drove in three run on three hits, while Greg Connell and Sammy Watson each scored three runs on three hits.
Alex Meneses,
Billy Zoffinger,
Ricky Sanchez and
Brian Lima each collected two hits for Barry.
Barry is now 9-13, while the Blazers, ranked ninth in the Collegiate Baseball national poll, are 16-4. The teams will play a rubber game tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
