Softball Tames Lions

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry University softball team tamed the Saint Leo Lions in a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader with two wins. The Buccaneers won the first game 4-1 and capped off the day with a 4-3 win in eight innings.

In game one, freshman Kim Fujimoto drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead in first. Gina McKeon kept the Lions in the game with a game-tying solo home run in the second. However, the Bucs took advantage of loaded bases in the fourth scoring two to regain the lead 3-1 and held on for the 4-1 victory.

In the nightcap, the Lions took a 1-0 lead in the third, but Fujimoto blasted a three-run homer in the fifth to give the Bucs a 3-1 lead. The Lions took advantage of a Buccaneer error in the seventh and scored two to tie the game at three apiece and sent the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth and runners on second and third, Heather Hodges became the Bucs' savior with the game-winning RBI single for the Bucs 4-3 win.

KD Smith went four-for-seven with an RBI and scored twice to lead the Bucs. Fujimoto finished three-for-six with a home run and five RBI.

Geralyn Elam (17-2) picked up both wins for the Bucs. She got the starting nod in game one and allowed one run and struck out 13. In the nightcap, Erin Cormier got the start and struck out nine in 6.2 innings. However, Elam was called out of the bullpen to pitch the final 1.1 innings and struck out one for the win.

In the first game Saint Leo's Heather Gamlin (4-7) took the loss giving up four runs on nine hits and struck out six, while Katie Heintz (6-4) took the loss in the nightcap and struck out seven.

The Buccaneers improved to 26-5 and 4-0 in the SSC, while the Lions fell to 13-14, 1-3 SSC. The Buccaneers will return to action in Boca Raton taking on Lynn at 2:30 pm in SSC play.
