Box Score DENVER, Colo. -- In a rematch of the 2001 Elite Eight first round, the Barry University volleyball team defeated the Western State Mountaineers a second time 3-2 ending a four-game losing skid in their final match of the Colorado Premier Challenge hosted by Regis University and Metro State.
In game one,
Fernanda Ferreira's 12 kills and
Melissa Lehman's seven service aces lifted the Buccaneers to a 30-12 win. However in the next two games, the Mountaineers bounced back downing the Bucs 28-30 and 21-30.
A revived Buccaneer squad stepped on the floor to take game four 30-21 sending the match into a fifth and final game. Down 8-2 in game five, Ferreira's fierce net attack was back in full swing as she rattled off five consecutive kills and a block giving the Bucs a 14-12 lead. The Bucs were able to finish strong taking the final game 15-13 for the win.
Ferreira led the Buccaneer charge with a match-high 26 kills, while tallying a .305 attack percentage, 14 digs and six total blocks. Sophomore middle blocker,
Sarah Alexander followed with 15 kills and a match-high .480 attack percentage.
Karla Bersano finished with 14 kills and a match-high 23 digs, while
Daniela Lanza served up 53 assists. Lehman also finished with eight kills and a career-high nine service aces.
Sarah McKinley and Joni Harmon paced the Mountaineers with 18 kills apiece, while Karen Samuelson added 14. McKinley posted a team-high 19 digs.
Ending their four-game losing skid, the Buccaneers improved to 2-4 on the season, while the Mountaineers fall to 0-8. The Bucs will resume action on Sept. 20 hosting cross-city rival St. Thomas at the Health & Sports Center at 7 pm.
