Box Score MELBOURNE, Fla.--Curtis Tonge rolled in a basket after the buzzer to lift the Barry men's basketball team to a 58-57 victory over Florida Tech and salvage a split of Sunshine State Conference games. Florida Tech prevailed 76-52 in the women's game.
In the men's game, the Panthers led 26-24 at the half and 57-54 with 1:05 to play. But Jordan Sztern sunk a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 57-56 and then the Panthers were reduced to a desperation three-pointer with the shot clock running down to set up Tonge's heroics.
Luis Vazquez-Bello led the Bucs with 17 points and nine rebounds. Tonge added 14 points and Sztern had 10. Colin Kearns had a career-high 17 points to lead the Panthers, while James Anderson added 13.
Barry improves to 11-7, 4-3 in the conference. Florida Tech falls to 5-13 and 0-7 in the SSC.
In the women's game, Florida Tech jumped out to a 36-20 half-time lead and cruised to a 76-52 win.
Jaida Williams led all scorers with 27 points for the Bucs, while Amra Alagic added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Hatasha griffin led the Panthers with 22 points.
Barry falls to 10-9, 4-3 in the league. Florida Tech improves to 15-4, 5-2 in the SSC.
Barry hosts Tampa on Saturday with the women's game at 2:00 pm and the men's game at 4:00 pm.
