Baseball Splits with Saint Leo

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAINT LEO, Fla. -- Freshman, Alex Gonzalez, picked up his first collegiate win while the Buccaneer offensive game combined for 5 home runs and 14 RBI to split a double-header with the Saint Leo Lions. The Buccaneers took game one 9-1 and Saint Leo won the nightcap 7-5.

In his first collegiate appearance, Gonzalez (1-0) got the start for the Buccaneers pitching eight innings allowing five hits, one run, and striking out six. Eric Paone (0-1) took the loss for Saint Leo pitching only 2.2 innings allowing six hits and five runs all earned.

Joey Apotheker got the offense rolling with a two-run home run in the top of the first, then broke the game open with a three-run third inning. The Bucs lead came on a two-out 2-RBI double by Alex Lorenzo. The Bucs went on to score two in the fourth and one in the sixth and eighth for the 9-1 victory over the Lions.

In the nightcap, Saint Leo struck first scoring one in the first. In the fourth, Brian Sheekey hit a two-run homer to put the Lions up 3-1. The big blow came in the third with Trevor Hall hit a two-run shot to put the Lions up 6-1. The Bucs tried to rally scoring on a solo homer by Apotheker in the sixth, and a two-run homer by Billy Zoffinger in the seventh, but the Lions held on for the 7-5 win.

Billy Ooley (1-0) earned the win for the Lions going 6.0 innings. He allowed six hits, two runs, and one walk, while striking out three. Reliever, Justin Schreiber picked up the save for the Lions, his first of the season. He hurled 1.0 innings allowing no hits and only one walk.

Keith Hameister (0-1) picked up the loss for the Bucs throwing 5.0 innings allowing seven hits, six runs, and only four earned while striking out four.

The Bucs get the season started with a 1-1 record while the Lions also start their season 1-1. Both teams will resume action on Sunday at 12:00 p.m for the final game of a three game series.
