MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—Barry University has named former Buccaneer Juan Yumar as its new head men's golf coach, Director of Athletics Dr. Scott Smith announced today. Yumar returns to Miami Shores after a successful career in many aspects of the golf industry.
"We're happy to welcome an alum back to lead our men's golf program," Smith said. "Juan was an outstanding student athlete at BarryU and represented the Venezuelan national team. I am confident that he will bring the same level of excellence as a coach."
Yumar most recently worked with Alto Rendimiento Azteca since 2024 as high performance manager and director of operations. He led player development and high-performance athlete management for elite amateur and collegiate golfers competing throughout the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean. He used some of the top data analytics, including DECADE Golf and Upgame, to develop individualized improvement plans and purposeful practice structures. He also assisted athletes navigating recruiting, transfer opportunities, NIL-related opportunities, and transitions into professional golf.
"I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to come back to the Buccaneer family and lead a program that means so much to me," Yumar said. "Barry is where I grew up, and it's a place that played a huge role in shaping the person and coach I am today. I'm especially thankful to coach [Jimmy] Stobs and coach [Carlos] Velez for believing in me and for everything they've taught me over the years. Their approach to developing people, not just players, has had a lasting impact on me, and I'm excited to carry those lessons forward as we continue building on the tradition of Barry men's golf."
Yumar previously worked for TaylorMade Golf in sports marketing and player relations. He managed athlete and collegiate golf relationships across the United States and Latin America as part of Team TaylorMade sports marketing initiatives. The recipient of the TaylorMade All-Star Award (2021), recognizing top-performing employees for leadership and organizational impact, he was a three-time TaylorMade Club Champion, as the company's top competitive golfer.
Yumar played for the Bucs from 2014-18, seeing action in 17 tournaments and posting a 75.61 scoring average. He represented Venezuela internationally for more than 20 years in elite amateur competition, serving as captain and team leader for Venezuela at multiple South American Team Championships.
He earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from Barry in 2018.
