Seventh Straight Win For Men's Volleyball to Close Out Regular Season On High Note

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The regular season has come and gone and the Buccaneer Men's Volleyball team heads into the IVA Tournament with a seven-match win streak. Returning home to the Health and Sports Center Gym, Barry took down the visiting UPR-Rio Piedras in three sets for their 16th sweep of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Set One – Rio Piedras scored the first point of the match off an attacking error. Barry took their first lead at 4-3 with a solo block from Jeremy Ferreira. A four-point run gave the Bucs the space they needed in the set. Zachary Jabr closed it out with a kill to take the match lead. Diego Alvarez had five kills in the set, hitting .571 off just one error in seven attempts. Both teams had 13 kills each, Barry held the advantage hitting .417 compared to Rio Piedras at .321. | Barry 25, UPRRP 20
  • Set Two – UPRRP was able to score first again, taking a 2-0 lead. Barry rallied back and scored five-straight to flip the scoreboard. The biggest lead came off a six-point rally by Barry. Alvarez started it off with a kill and then had a service ace immediately follow. Jabr also had back-to-back kills in the run. Maddox Gifford closed out the set with the final kill. Five different Bucs picked up a kill in the set. Jabr led the way with six on eight attempts. | Barry 25, UPRRP 14
  • Set Three – For the first time on the night, Barry scored first. Aaron Martinez put away the first kill. That lead held throughout the whole set as the Bucs cruised to the match victory. Alvarez closed it out with his seventh kill in the set. Martinez added four kills on five attempts. The offense made just one error and hit .536, while the defense held the Gallitos to a .115 hitting clip with four blocks. | Barry 25, UPRRP 17

NOTEWORTHY:

  • The Buccaneers offense set a new program record for hitting percentage with an overall .488 clip (47-5-86).
  • It is the second straight game Barry hits over .400.
  • The 47 kills tie a program high for three sets.
  • Diego Alvarez had a career-high night with 17 kills, setting career stats in back-to-back matches.
  • Jabr also had double digit kills with 11 on the night, hitting .556 with just one error.
  • Joao Piazza Baumgartem quarterbacked the offense with 40 assists, tying his own program record for most assists in a three-set match.
UP NEXT:
Barry will now head into the IVA Tournament and await their opponent as they received a first-round bye as the two-seed. The Bucs will play in the semifinal round against the winner of the Catawba and UPR-Rio Piedras match.
