Men's Volleyball Suffers Loss To Spartans; Closes Out NY Trip Versus LIU

BROOKLYN, NY  The Barry University men's volleyball team closed out their first road trip to New York dropping two matches today against St. Thomas Aquinas and Long Island.

HOW IT HAPPENED (STAC):

  • Set One - The Bucs fell behind early in dropping the first set. The Bucs did not score, other than off Spartan errors, until William Phinizy Managed to put down a kill that made is 12-5 for STAC. Barry closed to within five points, 16-11, on a block by Ryan Uridel, but the Spartans went on to close out the set. | STAC 25, Barry 16
  • Set Two -  Neither team started well in the second set, as the first five points for either side came on errors. But Barry led 3-2 at that point. After the Spartans built a lead, the Bucs won three straight points to close to within one point, 11-10, on a kills by Colton Beres and Tristan Blake and another STAC error. But the Spartans responded with a 6-1 run to go up 17-11 and held on for the set win | STAC 25, Barry 19
  • Set Three - The Bucs finally got on the board in set three. They jumped out to a 5-2 advantage, thanks to a service ace by Philip Tein, a kill from Uridel and a block from Beres and Eilias Fuhrer. Up just 20-18, Barry closed out the set on a 5-1 run, thanks to three straight kills from Beres.  | Barry 25, STAC 19
  • Set Four - After Barry opened with a kill from Fuhrer, the Spartans rolled out seven straight points behind the serve of Kyran Versteegen. Barry got back in the set with a 5-1 run of their own, with kills from Fuhrer and Tein and aces from Beres and Phinizy. But teh Spartans got nine of the next twn points to go up 21-11. At set point, 24-16, Barry staved off five straight before the Spartans finally put the match away on a kill by Andre Cippiciani. | STAC 25, Barry 21

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Colton Beres led the offense with 15 kills and added three aces and three blocks to score 19.5 points.
  • Tein led the team with 10 digs and added six kills, while Fuhrer had seven kills and nine total blocks.
  • Gabriel Vieira and Versteegen led the Spartans with 18 and 17 kills respectively.
  • Ivaylo Todorov had 11 digs and David Weiss had eight blocks.
  • Barry held a 14-12 blocking edge at the net and the point differential was just 66-57 for STAC.
  • Tristan Blake directed the Bucs' offense with 28 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED (LIU):

  • Set One - Colton Beres got the first point of the set, the rest of it would be in total favor of the Sharks. They only allows nine points for the Bucs. LIU swung .625 not committing a single attaccking error and finished the set scoring 11 of the last 12 points. | LIU 25, Barry 9
  • Set Two -  Barry came out the gate hot with a 4-0 start. LIU worked to tie it back at 10-all, where the teams held a short leash trading points. The Shark expand on that towards the end going ona 6-1 run. | LIU 25, Barry 19
  • Set Three - In the tightest set of the match, Barry hit their best .355 on 14 kills and just three errors. The Bucs battled until the end but ultimately were unable to close it out. | LIU 25, Barry 23
