Men's Volleyball Closes Out Opening Weekend With Another Sweep

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.   A perfect weekend for the Barry Men's Volleyball team ends with another sweep over Barton College. The Buccaneers won 9 of the 11 sets played over the last three days.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Set One - Barry had a slow start to the match but brought it back to a 5-all tie. The Bucs grabbed their first lead at 10-9 and strung together six straight points and extended it to 13-9. Barton battles back and both teams continued to trade points. After six set points were fended off by the Bulldogs, a block from Philip Tein and Maddox Gifford closed it out. | Barry 29, Barton 27
  • Set Two -  Another quick start for Barton had Barry battling from behind to begin the set. The Bulldogs got out to an 8-3 lead, but as we have learned, no lead has been safe. Barry was down 22-19 when things turned around scoring eight of the last 10 points in the set. After facing set point, Tein denied the threat with a kill then immediately got a block with Elias Fuhrer to switch the set point in favor of Barry.   • Set Three - The final set saw Barry jump out to a lead first, with Tein getting the first kill. This et was the tightest one trading point all the way through. Ryan Uridel closed the door on the game with a kill on an overpass from the Bulldogs. The Bucs had their best offense set of the match hitting .321 with 13 kills and just four errors. It was also their best defensive set with 4.5 blocks. | Barry 25, Barton 23.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Philip Tein had a career-high 20 kills in the match. The only player in double digits and second Buc to eclipse the 20-kill margin.
  • The setting roles were split between Tristan Blake and João Piazza Baumgartem  who had 25 and 12 assists, respectfully.
  • Maddox Gifford got his first start and executed with five blocks to lead the way.
  • Bobby Clapp  anchored the back row with 10 digs, recording double-digits for the second time this week.
  • The Buccaneer defense had 10 blocks, going back-to-back in double digits.
  • Barry led in points (52-49), kills (40-32), assists (39-30), and digs (46-39).
UP NEXT:
The team will now travel to New York to for a four game stretch next week between January 15 to 17.
