Historic Night Ends in Victory for Men's Volleyball Debut

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.   It was a night to remember in Miami Shores as the Barry Men's Volleyball team made their debut on home court. The Buccaneers became the first collegiate men's volleyball program to play an official match when they took on Erskine College Thursday evening. History continue to be made shortly after as the team won the first point, the first set, and inevitably the first match.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Set One - The Buccaneers recorded a point in the very first play with Philip Tein slamming down the first kill. Both teams battled back and forth trading off points. There were 20 ties and eight lead changes in the set. The set ended in deuce with Ryan Uridel and Colton Beres recording back to back kills to close it out. | Barry 26, Erskine 24
  • Set Two -  After falling behind 3-8 in the set, the Bucs rallied back to tie it up at 12 all. The scoreboard flipped off a service ace from Elias Fuhrer to make it 17-16. The set went into another deuce and finished off with a block from Chris Rivero and Fuhrer. | Barry 29, Erskine 27
  • Set Three - This set was dominated by Erskine. They opened with a 4-0 run, getting themselves settled in. The Flying Fleet ran away with the set with 13 kills, no attack errors and hitting .591. While the Bucs had their only negative hitting set. | Erskine 25, Barry 14
  • Set Four - Barry fell behind early again at 9-2. The team however did rally together six straight points to bring it within two at 14-12. Erskine held onto their lead and tied the match at two all. | Erskine 25, Barry 17
  • Set Five - It was going to be a dog fight in the last set with both teams trying to claw out the win. Things did not start out great as Erskine went up 3-0. Barry put together three straight points to tie things up at 7-7. The Buccaneers took their first lead off a kill from Tristan Blake. Tied up at 13 all, the match was brought home the same way it started with a kill from Philip Tein. | Barry 15, Erskine 13

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Colton Beres led the way with 21 kills, while hitting .302.
  • Tristan Blake led in the setting with 32 assists, adding eight digs.
  • Bobby Clapp and Chris Rivero held down the back row with 14 and 10 digs, respectively.
  • As a team, Barry had 46 kills while hitting .128.
  • The match was tied 45 different times and there were 14 different lead changes. All coming in sets one, two, and five.
  • The Bucs biggest advantage came at the serving line. Barry had five service aces against 11 errors, while the Fleet had just two aces and a whopping 27 errors.

The Buccaneers will return tomorrow for game one of two against Barton College from the Health and Sports Center.
