WARREN, Ohio --The second-seeded Barry Buccaneers ended their season tied for third in the NCAA Nationals at the Avalon Lakes Country Club. The Bucs fell to sixth-seeded Nova Southeastern 3-2-0 in the match play semifinals on Thursday.
SUMMARY:
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Nova won three of the five matchups.
- Alvarez, playing the first slot, had an early one stroke lead after Serra bogeyed on hole one. Alvarez kept his advantage throughout the round, getting his lead up to three strokes after the 15th hole, in which he was on par while Serra bogeyed.
- Hay took an early three stroke lead after hole four, but D'Ambrosio tied it up after birdies on holes five and six. D'Ambrosio took the lead on hole seven thanks to a bogey from Hay but Hay responded with a birdie on hole eight, which made his lead a stroke and he kept the lead until the end.
- Ewart was tied with Torres until hole eight, where Ewart took a two stroke lead thanks to a birdie. Ewart was able to remain under par and keep his advantage through the end.
- In this closely contested matchup, O'Neill took a two stroke lead after hole three, but Chamorro battled back to tie it up on hole 12 with a birdie. O'Neill jumped out in front by a stroke after hole 13 and kept his lead till the end.
- In another down to the wire matchup, Quintero fell behind four strokes after hole 14. He then finished the rest of the holes on par, to cut the deficit to one stroke after hole 17. Celestino scored par on the final hole to keep his lead.
NOTEWORTHY
- Four out of five Bucs scored under par for the round, while the Sharks only had two golfers finish under par.
- Second time the Bucs have gone out in the semifinals.
- Nationals semifinals is the highest finish for Barry since 2018.
- This was the Bucs' 15th appearance in the National Finals.
