WARREN, Ohio --The second-seeded Barry Buccaneers defeated seventh-seeded Sonoma State 4-0-1 in the quarterfinals of match play at the 2023 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship at Avalon Lakes Country Club on Thursday.
SUMMARY:
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Bucs did not lose a single match.
- Alvarez, playing out of the first slot had a five stroke advantage after 13 holes. Lavigne made up the difference, beating Alvarez by a stroke on the last five holes.
- D'Ambrosio trailed for the first 13 holes. He was able to tie it up at hole 14 after recording a birdie. At hole 15, D'Ambrosio took the lead by two strokes after recording a birdie and maintained the lead until the last hole, thus winning by two strokes.
- Ewart was tied with Pace after hole four. Ewart then took a two stroke lead after Pace bogeyed the fifth and sixth hole and Pace was never able to recover.
- Chamorro had the most convincing win of the day and carded the team-low round of 71 (-1). He took an early three stroke lead after the first hole when Friedman double-bogeyed the first hole. Chamorro extended his advantage throughout the rest of the round and never looked back.
- Quintero carded an E round for the Bucs and led the whole way. Quintero led by as much as seven strokes after recording a birdie on the fourteenth hole.
NOTEWORTHY
- Chamorro (-1) and Quintero (E) were the only Bucs par or under.
- Bucs advance to match play semifinals for first time since 2018.
