MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry Buccaneers host the Florida Tech Panthers in a Sunshine State Conference baseball series at Feinbloom Field on Friday and Saturday, Mar. 6-7.
The Bucs (12-4, 3-3 SSC) are coming off a 2-1 series win over previously 18th-ranked Florida Southern last weekend. The Bucs split a pair of games with Chestnut Hill during the week. The Panthers (5-14, 2-4 SSC) dropped their series two games to one to the fifth-ranked Tampa Spartans, then lost twice to Kentucky Wesleyan mid week.
Dealing with a number of injuries the Bucs' once-potent offense has slowed down recently, tumbling from a league-leading .311 average to .298 over the last three games. The Bucs registered only two extra-base hits, dropping the slugging percentage from .490 to .434. On the mound, the Bucs have also seen their ERA rise, from 1.69 to 2.33, although they still lead the conference. Chris Cabrera (.429) and Freddie Matos (.407) continue to lead the hit parade for the Bucs, ranking third and fourth in the league in batting. Cabrera also leads the circuit with 26 RBI and is tied for fifth with four homers. Frank II Gonzalez and Myles Gayman both bring 4-0 records into the series. Gayman leads the conference with a 0.27 ERA in 33.2 innings with 28 strikeouts and six walks. Gonzalez has a 1.44 ERA and 24 strikeouts against three walks in 25 innings. Mike Reagan has been the third starter this season, going 2-2 with a 2.00 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 18 innings.
The Panthers currently rank 10th in batting (.243) and eighth in ERA (4.82). Dylan Owens leads Tech with a .323 average and 12 RBI. Brett Parrish bats .280 and leads the team with two homers and 11 runs scored. Andrew Marzheuser leads the staff with a 2-2 record, 2.60 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 27.2 innings. Boris Villa (1-2, 4.00 ERA) and Joey Hecht (0-2, 4.79 ERA) have been the other two conference starters for the Panthers.
