MIAMI SHORES, Fla.--As the eighth Chi Alpha Sigma member in the state of Florida, Barry University was designated the "Florida Nu" chapter in the fall of 2019-20, under the direction of Frank Gonzalez, Coordinator of Student-Athlete Success. The Bucs inducted their charter class of 16 student-athletes in November.

19883Chi Alpha Sigma is the first national scholar-athlete society to honor those collegiate student-athletes who have excelled in both the classroom and in athletic competition. Chi Alpha Sigma recognizes varsity athletes who have maintained a 3.4 or higher cumulative GPA throughout their junior and/or senior years. Membership in local chapters is an honor bestowed upon selected student-athletes. Selection for membership is by an athletic department designee in consultation with the individual's head coach and is based on outstanding scholarship, earned athletic letter winner, and excellent character and citizenship. Founded in 1996 by then DePauw University head football coach, Nick Mourouzis, Chi Alpha Sigma continues to provide outstanding student-athletes with an opportunity to become connected within a fraternal association that aligns their educational and athletic successes for a lifetime.

The purpose of the organization is to encourage and reward high academic scholarship of college athletes at four-year accredited colleges and universities. To recognize outstanding academic achievement by intercollegiate varsity letter winners. To encourage good citizenship, moral character, and friendship among the high academic achievers in college athletics. To recognize and honor the individual athlete, his/her team, sport, athletic department, and college or university. To mentor and to provide leadership to other athletes. To gain career development skills and translate them into the workplace upon graduation.

Each year, new inductees will be announced and added to the roll. Honorees are presented with honor pins, tassels and a medal at commencement.
