HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. -- Barry University's fourth-ranked men's golf team finished on top of the leader board at the GolfWeek Invitational on Tuesday, Oct. 8, winning the tournament with a 11-stroke lead on second place Lee University.
It's unusual that you see a true freshman come in and lead a team with three former All-American upperclassmen, but AJ Ewart did exactly that, winning the individual title at -8, four strokes ahead of second place.
The 17th-ranked Lee Flames finished in second place at +2 and followed by Cal-State Monterey Bay at +21. All-in-all there was 13 teams competing at the Invitational.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:
"I hit the ball very well the last couple days," Ewart said, "I didn't make very many mistakes and the ones I did were very minimal and didn't cost me a lot. I made the putts I needed to make, played strategically and got it done. I think this win definitely gives us a boost and some momentum heading into the rest of the season."
"It was a nice win for the team," Buccaneer head coach Jimmy Stobs said, "After a poor start in Columbus it was good to get back on track this week. It was great to see AJ win. He has a lot of potential. It only took him two tournaments to win his first event which is a school record. Now on to Innisbrook."
