MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- BarryU's Jorge Garcia and Felipe Alvarez are set to compete at the Latin America Amateur Championship in La Romana, Dominican Republic from Thursday, January 17 until Sunday, January 20. Garcia will be representing Venezuela while Alvarez represents his home country of Colombia.
The Latin America Amateur Championship is a stroke-play tournament that originated in 2014 when The Masters Tournament and the USGA announced the event in an effort to continue to develop amateur golf in Latin America. This year, competition will take place at the Casa de Campo's Teeth of the Dog. The course was named the number one golf-resort in the world in 2015 by the International association of Golf Tour Operators. It is a 72-par course that is 7,210 yards in length. The winner of the event will earn a bid to compete at The Masters in Augusta, Georgia.
Garcia, one of the favorites at the event, will look to compete for the trophy and the masters bid. The senior from Miami, Florida was the runner-up at the 2016 Latin America Amateur Championship and has only become a better player since then, being named an All-American in 2018 and winning the Jennison Cup last September. Alvarez, a freshman for the Buccaneer men's golf team, will look to gain some valuable experience at the championship.
