LAKELAND, Fla. -- Barry University's 12th-ranked men's golf team is in second place after two rounds of the Matlock Collegiate Classic.
The Buccaneers shot 15-under 276-285 -- 561 in the first two rounds Monday at Lone Palm Golf Club's 7,065-yard, par-72 course. Host Florida Southern holds a five-stroke lead over the Bucs, thanks in large part to John VanDerLaan's blistering second round when he ripped off eight birdies on the front nine on his way to a 7-under 65. VarDerLaan and teammate John Coultas are tied for the lead at 9-under 135, two strokes ahead of Barry's Niclas Weiland.
Weiland shot 7-under 69-68 -- 137.Â
SUMMARY:
- Barry newcomer Jorge Garcia is in a three-way tie for fourth at 6-under 138. He shot 65-73.
- Kyle Brey is tied for 17th at 2-under 142. He carded back-to-back 71s.
- Also new to the Bucs lineup, Tyler Bakich is tied for 27th after shooting par with a 71-73 -- 144.
- Jack Allard is tied for 63rd at 153 after shooting 78-75.
- The Buccaneers led by four strokes after the first round. Florida Southern matched the Bucs' low round of the tournament with a 276 in the second round.
- Nova Southeastern is third at 12-under 564. West Florida is fourth at 11-under, and Lynn fifth at 8-under in the 15-team field.
NOTEWORTHY:
- Allard eagled the 499-yard, par-5 second in the opening round.
- Garcia made 11 birdies on the first day. He is two off VanDerLaan's tournament-leading 13 in the 75-player field. Garcia had nine birdies in the first round.
- Garcia's opening-round 65 tied for the low round of the day with VanDerLaan and Coultas.Â
- Weiland made nine birdies Monday.
- VanDerLaan's 29 on the front nine broke the course record of 30 most recently set by former Buccaneer Adam Svensson in 2014.
ON THE HORIZON:
The Bucs will tee off with Florida Southern and Nova Southeastern at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in the final round of the tournament.
