Women's Soccer Garners Three Academic All-America Awards

Grimshaw (1st-team), Ziegner and Sharpe (2nd-Team) honored by CoSIDA

2018 WS Academic All-America

Women's Soccer | 12/5/2018 1:41:00 PM

AUSTIN, Texas --Barry University, with three members, led the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Women's Soccer team. The Bucs' three honorees are the most of any school.

Midfielder Christy Grimshaw, the only graduate student on the teams, is a First-Team pick. In her first semester in graduate school, the Stonehaven, Scotland native graduated with a dual major in management and marketing, after compiling a 3.48 GPA. She is currently pursuing her MBA. Grimshaw, the Sunshine State Conference and NCAA Division II South Region Player of the Year, led the Bucs to a 16-1-1 record with 17 goals and 12 assists. Six of her goals were game-winners, tied for most in the conference. Grimshaw is the first Buccaneer women's soccer player to earn first-team honors on both the academic and athletic All-America teams.

Forward Molly Sharpe and keeper Melanie Ziegner were named to the Second-Team.

Sharpe, a senior in applied sport & exercise science from Bradford, England, carries a 3.78 GPA. The SSC Offensive Player of the Year, she saced 14 goals and added a league-high 13 assists. She also had six game-winners.

Zeigner, a senior from Muenster, Germany, carries a 3.97 A First-Team All-SSC and All-South Region pick, she went 14-1-1 in 17 games with a 0.38 goals against average and eight solo shutouts. Her GAA is the fourth-best in program history and gives her a school-record 0.57 career goals against average in two seasons.

Twenty-five of the 33 members of the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division II Women's Soccer teams have at least a 3.90 G.P.A., with 16 student-athletes maintaining a perfect 4.00 GPA. The 12 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.91. Anna Fobbe has been selected as the recipient of the Google Cloud Academic All-America® of the Year award for Division II women's soccer. An exercise science-pre-physical therapy major with a 4.00 GPA, Fobbe comes off a record-breaking season for Bemidji State. She led the Beavers to an 18-1-2 record and a berth in the NCAA Central Regional Championship.

The three Bucs give Barry 63 Academic All-Americans since Bill Reifsnider (Baseball) in 1988. It is only the second time that a team has had three selections in the same year. Men's tennis put Fabian Groetsch (2nd), Renato Lombardi (2nd) and Ahmed Triki (3rd) on the teams in 2015. The last women's soccer player to win before this year was Lavinia Nkomo (3rd) in 2015.

The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2018-19 Division II Academic All-America® teams program.
