Buccaneers top seed in league postseason tournament

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University's 19th-ranked men's basketball team will host Florida Tech in the Sunshine State Conference quarterfinals 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Health & Sports Center.

The Buccaneers (21-5) earned the top seed into the league's postseason tournament. Wednesday's game could be the final home game of the season. The winner advances to the semifinals 5 p.m. Saturday to meet the Palm Beach Atlantic-Tampa quarterfinal winner at Embry-Riddle's ICI Center in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Barry won both regular season meetings against the Panthers (15-13) this season. FIT finished the season strong, beating Lynn at home, Embry-Riddle on the road and Tampa at home before falling to Palm Beach Atlantic by four Saturday in the regular season finale. The Bucs won the first meeting in Melbourne by 12 on Nov. 19 and the second one, 103-78, in Miami Shores on Jan. 25.

The Panthers, who are scoring 87.4 points per game, while giving up 87.5, shoot 47 percent from the floor. Bucs point guard Elvar Fridriksson leads the league in assists per game (7.8), and is seventh in scoring (16.5). He was named this week's SSC Defensive Player of the Week, and is coming off a career-best 37 points, which matched Gonzalez for the most by a Buccaneer this season.
