MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—
Bill Sullivan announced a pair of freshmen joining the women's basketball team this week.
"Obviously, we had huge holes to fill after our losses from last year's team," Sullivan said. "Experience was key, but we also need to bring in some youth to help build toward the future."
Swingman Julia Paulin and point guard Jessica Landsberg join the team as rookies this year.
Paulin, from Taby Sweden, actually spent last year with current Buccaneer teammate Elin Ekdahl at Otero Junior College, but did not participate.
"Although Julia is young, she is a talented basketball player with a lot of International playing experience," Sullivan said. "She is a solid on-ball defender, an outstanding shooter and she fills our immediate need for depth in the backcourt. Julia is a welcome addition to our team and we foresee her excelling both on the court and in the classroom over the next few years."
She helped led the U16 Swedes to the 2011 European Championships. On the U18 team, she averaged 5.9 points per game, while shooting 43.1 percent from the floor and 75.0 percent from the free throw line.
"When I went to Barry on my visit, I felt a great atmosphere both when it comes to both basketball and academics," Paulin said. "The environment and the friendly welcome I received made me feel very good about my decision of becoming a Buccaneer. The coaches and other nice people I met helped convince me that I had found a great fit for me to continue my career both on and off the court."
Landsberg, a local product from Coral Gables High, will add depth to the point guard position and will also be a threat from long range.
"Jessica excelled both on the court and in the classroom at Coral Gables High," Sullivan said. "She was a stellar student in the international baccalaureate program and she put up some impressive offensive numbers on the basketball court. We are pleased Jessica chose to be a Buccaneer."
Landsberg, who played for coach AJ Sheppard with the Cavaliers, averaged 17.2 points per game and shot 47.0 percent from three-point range, ranking third in all of Florida.
"I decided to come to Barry for a multitude of reasons but, above all, because I know it is the place where I will experience the most personal growth on and off the basketball court" Landsberg said. "The girls are extremely welcoming and warm toward me, which will make this transition even smoother. I am beyond excited to be a part of such a tight-knit family with the same goal of wanting to get better, win, and succeed in all ways possible. As if the great teammates weren't reason enough already to come to Barry, the incredible coaching staff and athletic training staff made the decision a no-brainer. I hope to contribute as much as I can to this team in the years to come."
