MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- For coach
Butch Estes and the Buccaneers men's basketball team, the time arrived maybe a little quicker than the original blueprint.
"We anticipated and hoped that it would come to this, but this certainly is a little bit surreal that we're here right now this quickly in three years," said Estes, who owns a 70-21 record with three trips to the NCAA Tournament at Barry University.
No. 19/20 Barry (26-6) will meet No. 1/2 Lincoln Memorial (32-2) at 1 p.m. ET Wednesday in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals at Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco, Texas. Live Stream and Live Stats access to the game will be provided by
NCAA.com. Lincoln Rose and Chris McColpin, a former Texas Longhorn player, will handle the call.
This marks the first meeting between the two schools. It is also the first Elite Eight appearance for the Buccaneers, who set a school record for wins in a season after winning the NCAA South Region title at Alabama Huntsville. The Railsplitters are also making their first Elite Eight appearance in school history.
Lincoln Memorial has won 22 straight games, dating back to a 14-point loss at No. 13/17 Bellarmine on Jan. 2. Railsplitters guard Gerel Simmons averages 20.6 points per game while shooting 48.4 percent from three-point range. Guard Luquon Choice is scoring 17.1 points per game, and shooting 48.6 from long range. Guard Jalen Steele, a transfer from Mississippi State, is averaging 16.9 points and shooting 91.1 percent from the free throw line. Forward Dorian Pinson averages 9.9 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Steele is the lone Division I transfer on the Railsplitters' roster.
The Buccaneers, on the other hand, have six Division I transfers, including five starters. Senior swingman
Yunio Barrueta averages 24.3 points and 9.1 rebounds, while shooting 50.9 percent from the field. Senior center
Tray Leonard is averaging 11.3 points and 9.2 rebounds. He and Barrueta each have 13 double-doubles this season.Â
Senior guard
Anders Haas is scoring 12.9 points per game, and shooting 42 percent from the field. Sophomore point guard
Elvar Fridriksson leads the nation in assists at 8.2 per game, and is averaging 10.9 points. Junior forward
Undra Mitchem is averaging 10.5 points while shooting just under 41 percent. Haas is competing in his third straight NCAA Tournament -- the first at Division I Albany in 2014.
Junior forward
Adrian Gonzalez is averaging 11.7 points and shooting nearly 61 percent off the bench. Junior guard
Arie Williams is scoring 8.1 points and shooting 41.8 percent from the floor.
Both teams qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in their respective school's history.
Barry will host a Watch Party in Bucky's Cove in the R. Kirk Landon Student Union on campus for a viewing of the game on the big screen. Food and drink specials and promotional giveaways are planned.LIVE STREAMLIVE STATSGAME NOTES2016 NCAA Division II Men's Elite Eight® Basketball ChampionshipMarch 23, 24 and 26 • Dr. Pepper Arena • Frisco, Texas • Host Lone Star ConferenceÂ
