Baseball Falls Late to Tampa

Late homers by UT spoil upset bid

TAMPA, Fla. -- Barry baseball went toe-to-toe with the #1-ranked Tampa tonight but would fall late to the Spartans, 3-2.

The game was tight for the first five innings, with either team able to score on the other. The Buccaneers would change that in the 6th when Carlos Matamoros scored on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Quintana brought Alexander DeGoti home to make it 2-0, Barry.

The Spartans rallied back though, as Danny Lee hit a two-run homer to right center in the sixth.

UT took the lead for good in the seventh on a Casey Scoggins homer to right field.

Bucs' starting pitcher Alex Lavandero struck out a career-high 10 batters in 6.0 innings.UT starter Michael Calkins was also impressive as he struck out nine in 6.0 innings.

UT reliever Christopher Williams picked up the win however, as he struck out three in the final three innings to improve his record to 3-0 on the year. Lance Elder got the loss in a three strike-out effort over two innings to put his record at 1-1.

The Bucs now stand at 9-4 on the season and 2-2 in the Sunshine State Conference, while Tampa is 9-1 and 1-0 in conference play.

The series continues tomorrow as the teams square off in a doubleheader that is slated to begin at 1 PM.
