MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry baseball claimed its first series win as it defeated Wisconsin-Parkside 10-2 on Sunday. The 18th-ranked Buccaneers won the series, 3-1.
The Bucs got out to an early lead when a sacrifice fly by
Alexander DeGoti brought
Carlos Matamoros home in the first. The score remained unchanged until the fifth inning when
Alexis Monge's single through the left side brought in
Mike Diaz to make it 2-0.
The Rangers got one back in the top of the seventh when Zach Cummingham grounded out to second and brought Bryan Wade home to make it 2-1. The Rangers could've added more runs but a crucial play from a great throw by
Khalil Denson to
Ramon Valdez resulted in a play at the plate to get Zach Thompson out, a huge blow to UWP's comeback.
With the momentum of the play at plate, in the bottom half of the inning, Barry blew the game wide open to secure the win. Seven Bucs drove in runs to make it a nine-run ball game.
UWP scored again in the top of the ninth, but that was all the Rangers could muster.
Daniel Broeseker earned his first win of the year with an impressive showing, striking out six in six innings of work. Parkside starter Tyler Jandron took his first loss of the year.
The Bucs improved to 6-2 on the year, while UWP fell to 1-3.
Up next for Barry is the Sunshine State Conference-opening series against Eckerd beginning 6 p.m. Friday
