Baseball Wins Conference Opener

Dominant pitching and decisive hits leads to first SSC win for Bucs

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry baseball made a statement Friday night as it won its first Sunshine State Conference game with dominant pitching and decisive hits in a 5-1 win over Eckerd.

In the low-scoring affair, the Buccaneers got out to an early lead in the 2nd when Alffredi Ramos reached home due to a fielding error to make 1-0.

Eckerd would get one back in the 5th with an RBI double by Tom Buonopane.

A sacrifice fly by Jonathan Quintana brought home Alexander DeGoti in the 6th and the Bucs would finish off the Tritons in the 8th with RBI by Ryan Baldwin, Ramon Valdez and Mike Diaz.

Bucs starting pitcher Alex Lavandero had a huge night with eight strikeouts in 8.0 IP, earning his first win at Barry. Eckerd starter Jack Silberman got the loss in 6.2 IP.

Barry improves to 7-2 on the year and 1-0 in the SSC, Eckerd is now 3-3 and 0-1 in conference play.

The series continues tomorrow as the two teams play in a doubleheader starting at 1 PM.
