MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Buccaneers know the danger of overlooking the Sharks.
Yes No. 5/12 Barry (18-3, 10-2 Sunshine State Conference) sits atop the league standings. Yes Nova Southeastern (9-13, 4-9) has lost its past two, and is fighting for the last spot in the SSC Tournament. But forget all that. This rivalry has given us plenty of close games over the years.
Barry and Nova Southeastern meet 4 p.m. Saturday at NSU's University Center Arena in another installment of a rivalry that historically has been decided late in games.Â
In four of the last six meetings between these two teams, the outcomes have come down to overtime once and three one-possession games. That's all while
Butch Estes has been coaching the Bucs. Prior to his arrival, the outcome was decided by four points or less in nine of 10 games, dating back to 2009.Â
Barry escaped the first meeting with the Sharks this year, 89-86, on Jan. 13 at home. Needless to say, this rivalry usually brings out the best in both teams.
Barry is coming off a win over Florida Tech Wednesday when it scored over 100 points for a school-record seventh time this season. The Buccaneers had 34 assists in that game, which ranks second in single-game history. Bucs point guard
Elvar Fridriksson leads the nation in assists per game (8.6). He needs 42 more to break the season record of 221 set by
Deric Hill last season. Fridriksson recorded his fourth double-double of the season Wednesday when he had 13 points and 10 assists.Â
Newcomer
Undra Mitchem has scored in double figures in his last three games. He has reached double figures in 14 games this season.
Chris Page leads the Sharks in scoring at just under 20 points per game. He had 20 points in 16 minutes in the first meeting this year. Harrison Goodrick is averaging 15.5 points and 8.6 rebounds. Goodrick had a double-double the first time these teams met in January, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 boards.Â
