MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University's fifth-ranked men's basketball team takes it show on the road this weekend when the Buccaneers face Saint Leo 4 p.m. Saturday.
Barry (6-0, 3-0 Sunshine State Conference) was the only league team to beat Saint Leo (3-4, 0-1) in the Bowman Center last season. The Bucs escaped that game by two points. This year the Lions are 3-1 at home.
"They're off to a little bit of a slow start, but you can't be deceived because they've played a really tough schedule," Barry coach
Butch Estes said. "We're getting ready to face a monster in Saint Leo on Saturday."
Saint Leo's Marcus Dewberry is averaging 22.1 points per game. He scored 30 and 35 points on the season-opening weekend in a two-point loss to then-No. 5 Alabama-Huntsville and an overtime loss to North Alabama, which has received votes in the national poll. Barry's
Adrian Gonzalez also has scored 30 and 35 points in separate games this year.
Barry is coming off its worst shooting game of the season. The Bucs went 19 of 54 from the floor for 35.2 percent in Wednesday's win over Nova Southeastern. The Bucs hit just seven field goals in the first half in a game that featured nine ties and seven lead changes.Â
The Buccaneers were also outrebounded for the second straight game, losing the battle on the boards Wednesday, 36-24. Saturday's game features another rebounding challenge for Barry. Saint Leo leads the league in rebounding at 42.1 per game. The Bucs don't have a player on the roster averaging more than five rebounds per game. The Lions are also scoring 86.9 points per game, and the Bucs are giving up 77, so defensive execution is also a priority in this game.
Barry's next home game is Dec. 19 versus Indianapolis.
