MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry baseball suffered its first setback of 2016 today as it fell 11-9 to Newberry.
The Buccaneers did not make it easy for themselves early as they enter the bottom of the 1
st inning already down 6-0.
They would however edge themselves back into it when
Khalil Denson hit his first home run of the season into right field, bringing
Carlos Matamoros with him. In the 2
nd inning, a
Mike Diaz sacrifice hit would bring in
Frank Gonzalez to make it a 6-3 ball game.
Newberry would answer in the 3
rd, scoring two runs off a RBI single and a fielder's choice.
Barry would earn one in the 4
th thanks to a
Ramon Valdez RBI double into centerfield.
In the 7
th, Newberry would push its advantage, scoring three runs on a double down the right field line and a sac bunt.
In the 8
th, the Bucs would mount a valiant attempt at a comeback, scoring five runs thanks to an Alffredi Ramos sacrifice fly that brought Matamoros home, a hit-by-pitch on
Jonathan Quintana with the bases loaded, a Valdez 2 RBI single to center field and a
Mike Diaz RBI single.
In the 9
th, the Bucs had several opportunities to tie and even win the ball game, even having the bases loaded. But it was not to be as the Wolves would hold on for the win.
Newberry starter Zack Kelly earned his first win of the year with nine strikeouts in 7.0 IP. Barry starter
Armando Gonzalez took the loss on the day.
Up next for the Bucs is a visit from Colorado Christian on February 9 at 6 PM. Â Â
