Baseball Blasts Cougars

Bucs set school record with four-homer sixth inning

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers exploded for seven runs in sixth inning to overpower the Colorado Christian Cougars 13-5 at Feinbloom Field on Tuesday night.

The Buccaneers (3-1) blasted four homers in the sixth, setting a school record for homers in an inning, and they all came in the span of six hitters. Carlos Matamoros ripped a solo shot with two outs. After a walk to Khalil Denson, Alexander DeGoti sent a huge fly over the centerfield batting eye. Alfredi Ramos followed DeGoti with a homer to right center. After Jonathan Quintana reached on an error, Ryan Baldwin delivered a two-run shot over the centerfield fence for the record.

Barry went up 5-0 after the third inning. Quintana tripled to drive in DeGoti and Ramos in the first inning. Kyle Pangallo hit a towering homer to left in the second. Ramos and Quintana each drove in a run in the third.

But the Cougars (1-3) battled back to tie the game at 5-5 over the next three innings. Weston Weiderhold crushed a two-run homer in the fourth and Pete McWilliams hit a three-run bomb off Jonathan Hernandez (1-0) in the sixth to knot the game.

The Bucs broke the tie on an RBI single by Scott Cosculluela in the bottom of the sixth to score Pangallo who had drawn a lead-off walk. The homer barrage provided the Bucs a cushion and the Cougars never threatened again.

Mike Diaz scored the final run for the Bucs in the seventh inning. Cosculluela hammered a ball off the right field fence and Diaz scampered home when the relay throw back into the infield got away from CCU second baseman Branden Amenta.

Hernandez, the sixth of nine pitchers used by the Bucs, picked up the win, he gave up three runs (two earned) on McWilliams' homer and struck out one. Billy Atkins, who started the game, tossed the only perfect inning on the night for either team, striking out one. Lukas Joregensen (1-1) took the loss for CCU, giving up two runs (one earned) in two-thirds of an inning. He gave up two hits, including Matamoros' homer, and a walk. Austin Atkerson, who started for the Cougars, tossed 2.2 innings, giving up five runs on five hits and two walks.

The Bucs spread the offensive wealth around. Cosculluela led the team with three hits. Ramos and Baldwin each had two, including a home run. DeGoti scored three times, while Ramos, Denson and Pangallo each had two. Quintana drove in three, while DeGoti, Ramos and Baldwin each recorded two RBI.

Brandon Hesselberg went 4-for-4 for the Cougars.

The Bucs host the Rangers of Wisconsin-Parkside in a four-game set this weekend, with one game Friday, a double dip on Saturday and a finale on Sunday.
