Men's Basketball Adds New Point Guard

D-I transfer started every game as a freshman

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—Butch Estes added a key figure to the recruiting class in transfer point guard Elvar Fridrisson from NCAA Division I LIU-Brooklyn.

"With the loss of two outstanding guards this spring, it was critical to find addition help at these positions," Estes said. "Elvar earned a lot of playing time as a freshman. His maturity and experience will give our backcourt a lot of depth and competition."

Fridriksson, from Njardvik, Iceland, started every game for the Blackbirds as they went 12-18. The team's third-leading scorer, he averaged 8.9 points on 32.5 percent three-point shooting. He was second on the team in made three-pointers. He also averaged 2.6 rebounds and a team-best 3.8 assists per game.

One of the top amateur guards in his native Iceland, Fridriksson was selected Youth Player of the Year and named a First-Team All-Star in the Dominos League last season.

Fridriksson played for Njardvik in the top division league of Iceland, averaging 20.4 points and 7.3 assists in 27 contests. Playing for Iceland at the 2012 Under-18 European Championships, he totaled 22 points against Sweden and tallied 18 points, five rebounds and three assists in an 81-65 win over Norway.

"When I made the decision to transfer, I wanted to find a winning program and a place I would feel comfortable," Fridriksson said.  "From my first conversation with Coach Furr, I knew Barry would be a great fit for me, academically and athletically.  Once I looked into the program, I knew Barry was one of the top Division II programs in the country.  During my visit, I felt really comfortable with the coaches and the players.  The players made me feel very welcome and everything I had heard about the school was true.  The location and the people were exactly what I was looking for.  Now, I am excited to come in and work with the team for next season."

Fridriksson joins the freshman duo of David Sachs and Marko Tomic along with fellow transfer Undra Mitchem in the 2015-16 class.
