Baseball Upsets #1 Nova Southeastern

Clutch performances at the plate and on mound lead Bucs in upset

DAVIE, Fla.--Barry baseball came into their final series of the week looking to stir up some trouble for Nova Southeastern's bid at their first ever SSC title and Friday night they did just that as they upset the #1-ranked Sharks, 6-5.

The Sharks got the scoring started as Kavan Thompson came in on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. However, NSU left two men on base as the inning ended.

The Bucs responded in the fouth as Khalil Denson came in from third base on a fielder's choice and a Ryan Baldwin RBI single that brought in JC Cardenas to make it 2-1 Barry through the middle of the fourth inning.

The Bucs kept it going in the fifth inning as Khalil Denson hit an RBI single that brought in Jake Jacobs and then JC Cardenas slammed a three-run homer into right field to give the Bucs a 6-1 lead over the SSC leaders.

The Shark answered back in the bottom of the 6th as Kavan Thompson came in on a throwing error. And in the seventh, NSU added to its tally with a Michael Hernandez RBI sacrifice fly that brought in Mario Urdanet.

A Kavan Thompson RBI single brought in Justin Garcia as the Sharks attempted a furious comeback. They kept it going as Dylan Woods hit a RBI double to make it 6-5.
In the ninth, the Sharks attempted to come back and win the game but Bucs closer Jesse Montalto struck out all three batters in the bottom of the ninth to upset Nova Southeastern.

Bucs starter Nate Greve got the win to improve his record to 3-3 on the year in a eight strikeout, 6.1 IP effort. Nova starter Roberto Baroniel got the loss to put his record at 6-5. Montalto got his third save of the year.

The Bucs' record now stands at 21-26, 8-14 in the conference, while the Sharks stand at 36-11 and 16-6 in the SSC.

The series continues tomorrow with a doubleheader that begins at 1 pm.
