MIAMI SHORES, Fla. — A day of celebration of Barry baseball's seniors was bittersweet as the Buccaneers fell 9-4 and 10-3 to Sunshine State Conference foe Saint Leo.
Before the day's doubleheader, the Buccaneer baseball program celebrated the accomplishments and contributions of four seniors:
Greg Brodzinski,
Jesse Montalto,
Will Walker and LK Thompson, as they played their final series at Feinbloom Field.
In game one, the Bucs (18-24, 6-12 SSC) allowed four runs, and were never able to get going in the game as they went scoreless until the seventh inning. In the seventh,
Jake Jacobs singled down the left field line to bring
Ramon Valdez home, and
Frank Gonzalez singled to bring in Jacobs and Brodzinski.
The burst of offense proved to be shortlived as Saint Leo (31-11, 12-9) added two more runs in the eighth to secure the win.
Starting Bucs pitcher
Jonathan Hernandez's record fell to 5-4 on the year with the loss, as he recorded a season-high eight strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Lions starter Jordan Pendleton improved to 6-0.
The second game was a much closer affair at the start as it went scoreless until the Lions opened it up with four runs in the top of the fifth. The Bucs answered with a
Ramon Valdez RBI double that brought in
JC Cardenas to make it 4-1.
However, Saint Leo tacked on four more runs before the Bucs could respond on a Brodzinski sacrifice fly that scored
Kyle Pangallo in the seventh, and a
Will Walker RBI single down the right field line that brought in Jacobs.
The Lions added two more runs in the ninth off a home run, going on to win, 10-3.
Bucs starter
Adrian Benitez took the loss in a four-inning, three-strikeout effort that dropped his record to 2-3, while Lions starter Jordan Taylor improved to 3-1 after striking out three in 7 2/3 innings.
Barry hosts Ave Maria at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the final home game of the season.
