MELBOURNE, Fla.—Barry baseball came into Tuesday on a good run as of late and had confidence that they could take something from their midweek match against Florida Tech. However, the #7-ranked Panthers proved too much as they defeated the Bucs 9-6.
The Bucs were productive at the plate today with eight batters earning hits in the game.
Jonathan Quintana,
JC Cardenas, and
Jake Jacobs all leading the team in hits with two-a-piece.
The game was close early with the Panthers getting a 2-0 lead in the first inning off a RBI double by 2B Reid Neal and a RBI sacrifice fly by 3B Ricky Rodriguez.
The Bucs tied the game up in the second off with
Ramon Valdez reaching home on a fielder's choice and
Jonathan Quintana adding a run on a wild pitch.
Barry then took the lead in the third on a
Greg Brodzinski RBI single that brought
Jake Jacobs home to make it 3-2 Bucs.
However, the Panthers would retake the lead in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs and then adding to their lead with two runs in the fifth inning and another in the sixth.
The Bucs attempted a comeback as they scored three runs in the eighth thanks to a
Mike Diaz RBI double that brought in
Jonathan Quintana, a fielder's choice that brought in
Kyle Pangallo and a
Khalil Denson RBI single that brought home Diaz.
The Bucs were unable to add to their tally in the ninth however and fell to their SSC rivals in this non-conference game.
Bucs starting pitcher
Jonathan Quintana got the loss in a 2.0 IP, one strikeout effort to put his record at 0-2 on the year. FIT pitcher Ty Cohen improves to 6-0 after 3.0 IP and allowing four hits and three earned runs.
The Bucs now stand at 17-22 on the year and in 5-10 in the SSC while Florida Tech improves to 33-7 and 13-6 in the conference.
Up next for Barry is their final home series of the year as they take on SSC opponent Saint Leo in a three-game series that begins April 17 at 6 pm.
