GAME NOTES
MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Here's one thing to consider about Wednesday's Top 3 matchup with Florida Southern:
If this game is anything like the first, expect points to be scored.
No. 2/3 Barry (17-1, 9-0 Sunshine State Conference) hosts No. 4/2 Florida Southern (19-1, 7-1) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Health & Sports Center in a key battle for the top spot in the conference. The game will air on the
Buccaneers Broadcast Network.
In the first meeting, the Buccaneers outlasted the then-No. 1 Moccasins, 107-102, in Lakeland. The 107 points is the second most this season for the Bucs. Conversely, the 102 points is the second most allowed. In both respects, the scoring totals set season-highs in regulation.
The Bucs, who received two first-place votes in the College Sports Information Directors of America media poll and one in the National Association of Basketball Coaches poll for the first time in school history, made 41 field goals in the first meeting with the Mocs. Florida Southern hit 34 buckets.
The Mocs have the fourth-highest scoring offense in Division II at 91.7 points per game. The Buccaneers rank 11
th at 87.3. Barry leads the country in assists per game (20.4). Florida Southern is 15
th at 17.5. Florida Southern ranks second in the nation in free throws made and fourth in free throw percentage (78.1). Barry ranks 11
th in free throw shooting percentage (76.7).
All the national rankings statistical categories aside, these two teams just win. Florida Southern has the fourth-best win percentage in the country at 95 percent. Barry is sixth at 94.4.
OK, so we threw another national stat out at you, but you get the point. In fact, only one team in Division II remains unbeaten – Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.). Neither of these two teams would see the No. 1 team in the country until the NCAA Tournament.
More than anything, what Wednesday offers is a big-time matchup in Miami Shores – the biggest ever at the HSC. The Bucs have a chance to move two games up in the SSC race. The Mocs could even the race with a win.
Isn't February basketball grand?
