Softball Splits Season Finale With Saint Leo

ST. LEO, Fla. -- The Barry University softball team (35-19, 15-9 SSC) split a Sunshine State Conference double-header with the Saint Leo Lions (35-15, 16-8 SSC) earlier today at University Field. The Buccaneers lost the first game 2-0, but rallied to win the nightcap 7-1.

Both teams collected four hits apiece, but the Lions took advantage of a fourth-inning Buccaneer error and scored twice. That was all Saint Leo needed for the win. Each team had four different players to pick up single hits, while the Lions' Monique Dominguez picked up an RBI.

Ramie Garcia (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) gave up two runs (one earned) and struck out five in the loss for Barry, while Kiki Von Holt (1-0) picked up her first win of the year giving up just four hits and struck out four.

Barry rallied in the nightcap when Maile Keeney (So., Longwood, Fla.) led of the second inning with a solo home run to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead. Kim Fujimoto (Jr., Carmichael, Calif.) picked up an RBI single in the third to extend the Buccaneer lead. Erin Sutton (Sr., Parrish, Fla.) picked up three RBI and Heather Hodges (Sr., Clearwater, Fla.) collected an RBI single to give Barry two runs in the fourth and sixth innings, while Amanda Moore (Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) accounted for Barry's last run. Saint Leo's Hayley Mallory belted her first homer of the year in the seventh that led to the Lions' only run as Barry held on for the 7-1 win.

Elizabeth Bennett (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) gave up one run on three hits and struck out three to improve to 20-10 overall. It was also the second consecutive year she has posted a 20-win season. Heather Gamlin (8-7) suffered the loss giving up seven runs (two earned), nine hits and struck out four.

Sutton was two-for-three with three RBI to lead the Bucs on the day, while Mallory collected three hits, two RBI and scored twice to lead the Lions. Hodges also closed out her four-year career with a school record 224 games started after starting every game since her freshman campaign in 2002.

Winning the series 2-1, the Buccaneers await a possible bid to the NCAA regional and third in four years. The NCAA regional announcement will be made Sunday, May 8.
